Noticing a receding hair line these days? Well, hair loss, however embarrassing, is a common concern witnessed by most men at some point in their lives.
Hair loss refers to excessive loss of hair from the scalp. It is customary to lose some hair each day (50-100 strands) as a part of the cycle of growing and shedding hair. However, when the hair loss is excess, it becomes a cause for concern. A lot of factors trigger hair loss, such as unhealthy lifestyle, stress, pollution, improper diet.
Hair loss is the first sign of distress within the body; so, it needs to be taken seriously. This is because the health of your hair and your scalp provide insightful cues into a host of latent disorders – such as thyroid problems, diabetes and heart diseases – much before a clinical diagnosis is established.
Your hair goes through three distinct phases of growth- anagen, catagen and telogen. These stages occur simultaneously and it is the characteristic of each phase that determines the length of the hair.
The various hair related concerns in men such as hair loss, balding, dandruff and receding hair line could arise due to a host of reasons such as hereditary factors, stressed lifestyle, rising levels of pollution and exposure to harmful chemicals. It can be seen between ages 15 to 25.
Hair loss in men i.e. male pattern baldness starts with a receding hair line from the lateral sides of the forehead. Hereditary hair loss in men is due to the action of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) on scalp hair follicles. The hair follicles react to dihydrotestosterone making them shrink and balding gradually takes place.
Hair loss, therefore, requires a personalized approach for treatment. The selection of treatment is based on diagnosing the exact cause of hair loss, extent of hair loss, grade of baldness as well as condition of the hair and scalp.
At Aesthetica, our experts in hair restoration will guide you through the process and hand hold until you feel good about your hair once again. So, whatever the hair problem, now is the time to bring back its lost glory.
Hair loss is male is one of the most common problems in today’s time. People as young as 20-22 years old experience extreme hair loss due to lifestyle issues and insufficient care. Hair loss in males can be treated without the need of hair transplantation if the right care is taken at the right time.
There are certain specific types of hair loss in men characterized by the symptoms arising and are treated as per expert recommendations.
Male Pattern Baldness (Androgenic Alopecia)
Male Pattern Baldness is characterized by a receding hair line and hair thinning on the crown. It is caused by hormones and genetic predispositions. The hairline gradually moves backward and forms an "M" shape. Eventually the hair becomes finer, shorter and thinner, and creates a U-shaped (or horseshoe) pattern of hair around the sides of the head.
Male Pattern Baldness, also called Androgenetic Alopecia, is the most common type of baldness. Andro refer to Androgen, the male hormone present in both men and women.
Dr. O’tar Norwood published a classification for male baldness in 1975. This classification entails two major patterns and also several less common ones. There are two main areas of hair loss: bitemporal recession and thinning over the crown. Hair loss in these two areas increase as baldness progresses leading to coalescence until front, top and crown are entirely bald. On careful evaluation by an expert, you may be categorized under one of the grades and appropriate treatment may be prescribed.
CLASS I
It does not indicate balding but represents an adolescent or juvenile hairline. It rests on the upper brow crease.
CLASS II
It indicates progression to adult or mature hairline located at 1.5cm above above the upper brow crease. There is accompanying temporal recession.
CLASS III
Is the earliest stage of male hair loss. It is characterized by a deepening temporal recession.
CLASS III VERTEX
Vertex represents early hair loss in the crown
CLASS IV
Is characterized by further frontal hair loss and enlargement of vertex. There is still a solid band of hair across top separating front and vertex.
CLASS V
The bald areas in the front and crown continue to enlarge and the bridge of hair separating the two areas begins to break down.
CLASS VI
Occurs when the connecting bridge of hair disappears leaving a single large bald area on the front and top of the scalp. The hair on the sides of the scalp remains relatively high.
CLASS VII
Patients have extensive hair loss with only a wreath of hair remaining in the back and sides of the scalp.
Spot Baldness / Bald Patches (Alopecia Areata)
Alopecia areata is a type of hair loss that occurs when body’s immune system mistakenly attacks the hair follicles. This damage to the follicles is usually not permanent. It is not clearly known why the immune system attacks the follicles. Alopecia areata is most common in people younger than 20, but children and adults of any age may be affected. Men and women are equally effected. Alopecia areata usually begins when tufts of hair fall out. This gradually results in smooth, round bald patches on the scalp. In some cases it may just present itself as thinning of hair without noticeable patches of baldness, or the effected hair follicles may sprout again and break off. In rare cases, a complete loss of scalp hair and body hair is experienced. About 10% of people with this condition may never regrow hair. Our dermatologist may recommend AA, intralesional steroids and topical minoxidil for cases where there is continual hair loss. For cases of extreme hair loss like alopecia totalis and alopecia universalis , where there is extensive hair loss on scalp and body, topical immune modulators may be administered.
Diffused Shedding (Telogen Effluvium)
Telogen Effluvium follows a traumatic event or sudden hormonal change in the body. In Telogen effluvium, hair in the anagen (growing) phase or catagen (resting) phase shift all at once into the shedding (telogen) phase. It can start presenting itself after about after six weeks to three months of the stressful event. The traumatic event may include severe infection, child birth, low protein diet, malnutrition, prolonged stress and depression.one must seek expert advice on hair loss solution in India.
Chemotheraphy Baldness (Anagen Effluvium)
This hair loss is generally associated with chemotherapy. There is an attack on the hair follicles which hampers its mitotic or metabolic activity. Anagen Effluvium includes shedding of hair soon after chemotherapy begins during the growth (anagen) phase of hair. The hair loss is mostly reversible and the hair grow back within months of resolving the causative factors. You can consult our dermatologist in Delhi for hair loss treatment.
Scar Baldness (Cicatricial Alopecia)
Cicatricial Alopecia is also commonly known as scarring alopecia. It is a rare disorder that destroys hair follicles. The hair loss is permanent and the hair follicles are replaced by scar tissue. Commonly experienced symptoms include pain, severe itching and burning sensation. Visit a dermatologist if you are experiencing chronic hair loss and other related symptoms in order to start an early and aggressive treatment.
Traumatized Baldness (Traction Alopecia)
Traction Alopecia is caused by localized trauma to the hair follicles due to constant traction or pull applied to hair over time. Tight braiding, cornrows, tight ponytail and tight headgears can lead to hair loss eventually. It is common among Sikh men who prefer to use turban all the time. The stress caused on the hair can result in balding.
Compulsive Disorder Baldness (Trichotillomania)
It is compulsive disorder urging people to pull out hair from scalp, beard, eyebrows, eyelashes and other parts of the body. It can eventually lead to visible bald patches on the scalp. Expert advice and help must be sought to correct this repetitive behavior and restore back the lost hair.

Female Pattern Baldness (Androgenic Alopecia)
Androgenetic Alopecia, known as pattern baldness is a hereditary disorder. It is caused due to the influence of androgenic hormones which makes the hair follicles shrink. In males, it begins with a well-defined pattern above the temples, which then, over a period of time is observed as a receding hair line. In case of women, the pattern of hair fall and thinning is different. The hair starts thinning from all over the head.
Pattern hair loss, caused by hereditary factors is classified under the Lugwig scale into three stages or types.
Ludwig Scale : Stage 1
Type 1 is considered a mild stage of hair loss. This hair loss may occur on the top and front of the scalp but the frontal hairline may be relatively unaffected. More and more scalp becomes visible with time and the hair loss is noticeable when the hair is parted at the center of the scalp.
Ludwig Scale : Stage 2
Type 2 is considered a moderate stage of hair loss. The center parting gets widened and further shedding and decrease in volume is observed.
Ludwig Scale : Stage 3
Type 3 is an advanced stage wherein the hair loss is extensive and the progressive thinning and hair miniaturization makes the hair so thin that the scalp becomes very visible.
Shedding or Thinning (Telogen Effluvium)
Telogen Effluvium is a form of diffused hair shedding or thinning that happens all over the scalp. Usually your hair is in the anagen phase for two to four years before entering the telogen phase for two to four months, after which it sheds and is replaced by new hair. When the hair makes an early entry into the telogen phase it is called as the resting phase. The signs start becoming visible in 2-3 months, whereas hair fall continues for 3-6 months.
Localized Patches Hairfall (Alopecia Areata)
Alopecia Areata is spot baldness in which hair is lost in coin shaped patches. It occurs when body’s immune system attacks its own hair follicles and stops it from growing. If the patches are not many in number then there are chances that hair will grow back, but in severe cases the patches might multiply. This condition usually begins with falling of hair strands resulting in hairless patches on the scalp. The lost hair generally grows back in a few months.

Itchiness due to dandruff often causes irritability and embarrassment. Dandruff does make your scalp itchy and flaky. That white flake which you scratch off from the scalp is nothing but itchy dead skin. Males are more prone to dandruff concerns compared to females. It can be observed with the onset of adolescence which then continues till adulthood. You may try to get rid of it by maintaining a good hair wash routine, but that is not a sustainable solution.
The scalp skin constantly renews itself. That is when the old skin drops off and new one replaces it. This cycle is not visible when it is in the initial phase. But when the process accelerates, many more old skin cells shed in the form of visible clumps or flakes. The moment you brush your hair or rub through it, you will notice these flakes fallen on the shoulders or against any dark-coloured clothing.
In terms of severity, itching and flaking are equally alarming. The common form of dandruff affects the entire scalp, but not the skin over the face or neck. Severe dandruff concern means quick shedding of old skin, which can lead to uncontrollable itchiness.
Apart from drying of the scalp skin, there are many other reasons for dandruff. If your scalp skin is sensitive to hair products, it can also lead to dandruff. Also environmental factors such as heat and humidity can aggravate dandruff. The concern can be observed either throughout the year or can vary as per season.
Dandruff, if not treated at the right time, can cause hair loss and scalp inflammation. If your skin is suffering from acne or oily skin, the condition can worsen because of the flakes.
Flaking
Scalp skin renews itself on a regular basis. The old dead skin then forms visible clumps of flakes across the scalp. These white flakes then fall off and get replaced with new scalp skin. It can also be a result of dry scalp or an oily scalp which clumps the excess cells and then fall off.
Scalp Itchiness
Scalp itchiness, also known as Seborrheic dermatitis, is caused due dandruff. If your scalp is sensitive, then it is more prone to itchiness. Besides dandruff, seasonal changes and hormonal fluctuations can also make your scalp itchy. Excessive itching can lead to scabbed or flaking skin.

Brittle and Breakage Prone Hair -
Extreme dryness or oiliness, thinning, shedding etc. are signs of weak or breakage prone hair. It is often genetic or can be caused due to stress, poor diet. Even environmental impact like sun exposure, chlorine or salt water and air pollution affects the health of hair.
Frizzy Hair –
Hair becomes frizzy when the cuticle layer of your hair opens up and moisture passes through them, swelling up the hair strands. This eventually leads to dull and frizzy appearance of the hair. People with curly hair experience the frizz more compared to those with straight hair.
Dull Hair –
Dull hair is not just unhealthy but also it tends to absorb light instead of reflecting it. Many factors trigger dull hair like chemical effects, styling tools, climatic changes and stress.
Limp Hair –
If proper hair care is not given to the hair, there are high chances of experiencing limp hair. Our lifestyle plays a major role in causing it. Improper hair wash routine, heat, chemical treatments, any health issue, stress, smoking etc. impacts the hair health.
Dry and Rough Hair –
Hair has no natural lubrication. Hence, hair generates oil to keep itself moisturized. When the hair stops producing oil or the hair moisture vanishes, the hair tends to become dry and rough. Also, when layers of cuticle separate, moisture from the hair escapes, which leads to dull and rough hair.
